Robert Kaufman was born in 1899 in Russia. He came to the United States as a young boy and settled in New York City. Robert pursued a dream to become a store proprietor and in his early twenties was successful in opening a menswear store. Unfortunately due to the great depression his first venture failed. Persevering, Robert again opened a new venture in 1942, that was also a menswear store. Due to family health issues he moved his family to Los Angeles in 1944 and restarted his menswear business there, adding fabric to the mix of offerings. His business flourished and in 1955 with the addition of his two sons they moved their focus from fabric jobber to becoming a fabric converter. Continually expanding their offering of fabrics, they introduced cotton prints in the 1970's as well as offering rayon/cotton blends along with a range of other fibers. In the 1980's they shifted their marketing focus to the manufacturing sector as well as the quilting industry as sales to fashion fabric retailers was dwindling due to the influx of inexpensive ready made clothing from China. Today Robert Kaufman Fabrics continues to serve the manufacturing industry who converts their fabrics into a variety of decorative accessories including; bedding, pillows, lampshades and light use upholstery products.
