Design with Green in Mind
Thinking about going green? Purchasing environmentally responsible products that are good for people and the environment does not mean sacrificing style. Great looking, eco-friendly home decor is available at affordable prices in everything from fabric and drapery rods to furniture and flooring.
When possible reuse old products. For example, there are places on the web to purchase used furniture: try craigslist.org or freecycle.org.
A discarded piece of furniture can be transformed into a beautiful family heirloom that resembles its owners personal style. There are earth-friendly finishes to assist in the process. Try Bioshield Natural paints and wood stains, Dunn Edwards paints and the Real Milk Paint Company. These companies all produce products that do not release any toxins into the environment when applied or stripped. Re-upholstery can be done with earth-friendly fabrics as well – check out our collection here.
Understanding the labels on new products can be quite a task. Current eco-friendly certifications:
o Greenguard Certification- A product has been tested and approved as a low emitting product - better indoor air quality.
o MBDC Cradle 2 Cradle Certification- A product has been responsibly and sustainably designed from its creation until its rebirth as another product.
o Forest Stewardship Council-Certified Wood - The trees to make a product were cut in a responsible manner with little environmental impact. If the furniture just cannot be reused, try looking for eco certified products.
Many renewable resources are available today. Look for bamboo, cork, beechwood, recycled wood scraps, recycled products made from plastic or paper, hemp, wool, jute, corrugated cardboard and stainless steel. As a result of today's social awareness, many wonderful resources have been developed. The prices have never been better and the impact on the environment has never been more important.
