Mantel Decorating Tips
Christmas is over and the mantel is looking a little bare and quite unglamorous without all of the sparkle of the holidays. Your mantel can have a dramatic effect on your whole room. Create a fabulous mantel with the following ideas and guidelines.
The style of your room will dictate the best look for your mantel. Traditional mantels usually feature a symmetrical arrangement. To create a formal display, center a large picture or mirror over the mantel and balance with matching objects on each end. A less formal room may allow you to display a favorite collection or heirloom pieces. A more modern room might look best with a few simple objects, where an eclectic room would allow you to use every bit of space.
Using the mantel as an easel is a popular decorating style. Lean a mirror or artwork against the wall to create a casual look. Layering mirrors, artwork or photographs is also a beautiful way to create depth. Another option is to use your mantel to showcase a single, show stopping piece. For example, an oversize metal sunburst creates a striking focal point. If you think your mantel looks a little bare with just one piece, add a pair of candlesticks to give it a bit more presence.
One method for decorating your mantel is to follow the three plus one rule. Group three objects of similar style on one end and put a large object such as a big vase, topiary, etc. on the other end with large mirror or artwork in the middle.
So get inspired and get to work making your mantel the showcase of your room!
