All About Traverse Rod Carriers

For our explanations and videos, we are using Graber Heavy/Super Heavy Duty Traverse Rods

Traverse Rod Carriers

There are two types of carriers in a traverse rod: Master Carriers and Slides
You can think of the master carrier as the engine of a train which pulls/pushes the other carriers along. When you close your draperies, the master carriers pull the slides along. When you open the draperies, the master carriers pushes the slides back to the sides of the window. A corded traverse rod uses a string that is attached to the masters only and looped around a pulley in the bracket housing.

Carriers can be all plastic and just slide along. Others may have ball-bearing rollers to make the job even easier. Some are wheeled but still plastic. Shop Traverse Rod Parts and Carriers

Technically the two Master Carriers have different names. The one that overlaps the top of the other one is called the Master Carrier, and the one underneath is called the Secondary Carrier.

On a two-way draw traverse rod, the side that the pull cord is located can easily be changed by simply pulling the cord. To do this use some needle nose pliers to grab the cord that is wrapped around the pulley on the opposite end of where the cord is currently located, which is typically on the right-hand side of the traverse rod, and simply pull it down. All the cord from the side where the cord was originally located will draw up into the rod and now be on the opposite side. That’s all there is to it.

How To Remove and Replace Slides

Tips for installing a traverse rod: Draperies Just Touching the Floor

  • Measure the outside edge of the drapery to get exact length.
  • Check the pin setting by attaching to the master carrier and holding rod in place.
  • Don't forget to adjust for actual screw holes in the bracket.
  • After installing, don't forget to set the position of the Secondary Master Carrier in place or only the side with the Primary Master Carrier will open and close properly.
  • Leave a little play in the cord when you are adjusting the cord tension device - you don't want it to be too tight.
  • If the drapes don't hang exactly where you want them, you can always adjust the pins (not real fun though). Keep in mind if you adjust them too much that you may end up with the rod showing.
